Grottescherie Editions is a research and publishing project devoted to the (re)discovery of ornamental design, particularly in its most excessive and extravagant form: grotesque ornament. Its bizarre subjects and whimsical compositions have inspired artists, designers and art lovers since the 15th century. We believe they still have much to say today.

Our sources are early printed books and ornament prints. Published from the Renaissance through the Baroque period, these works served both as sources of inspiration for artists and craftspeople and as decorative objects in their own right.

Drawing on collections held in archives, libraries and museums, we restore and reprint these images for contemporary eyes. From art prints to hand-bound notebooks and bookmarks, each piece offers a new encounter with the strange and unexpected histories of ornament.
